A security guard of some 17 years standing, Robert Gartshore suddenly found himself in the position of having to seek employment in his late 50s – an extremely daunting prospect for anyone so far into their working life. Following a period of unemployment, Robert engaged with Routes to Work on the Work Programme in February 2017 to try and turn things around. Finally, after around six weeks of intensive job searching with his caseworker, Robert was offered temporary employment with a recruitment agency as a litter picker. Although not his ideal job, it helped him ease the pressure on his finances.
Robert’s employment with the agency ceased after one month - but with the support of his caseworker, Robert was able to secure a position with a security company, taking up his new job within 4 weeks. This was the type of work he was experienced in, so he was delighted that Routes to Work had supported him to attain the role. During the course of his employment, Robert was provided with comprehensive in-work support, something that was to prove valuable after it became clear that he was having concerns about the job and conditions. After discussion with his In Work Support (IWS) Advisor, Robert decided that he would seek other employment whilst still remaining in work. Robert’s IWS Advisor fully supported Robert with all aspects of the alternative recruitment opportunities, including assisting with online applications and giving advice/preparation for the interview process. Not only did Robert take up a new position as Estates Officer with North Lanarkshire Council, but he successfully reclaimed holiday pay entitlement of £800 from his previous role – thanks to support from Routes to Work and his IWS Advisor who advocated for him, provided in-depth tax advice and liaised with his old employer. Robert has now been settled in his perfect role for nearly a year, and he already has his sights set on staying until he retires. With his skills and experience in full use, the future is looking brighter than ever. “I am really happy with the service I received from Routes to Work, I would never have been able to find work without their help. The staff are friendly and helpful and couldn’t do any more for me” ROBERT GARTSHORE |
