This event took place on Friday 28th June, where we invited a range of partners, clients, employers and stakeholders to participate.
The format of the day was to celebrate the success of how ‘we’ at Routes to Work coupled with North Lanarkshire Working, close the gaps by supporting the residents and businesses of North Lanarkshire.
The team who consisted of Julie Davidson, Susan Young, Sharlene McVey, Roseanne Lynch, Steven Smith, Danielle Boyle, Claire McKenna, Ann Kerr, Anne Leadbetter, Maureen McCarthy, David McCaig and Cara Platt worked hard to organise what was a very successful event.
The finale of the event was an award ceremony for our nominated categories
We had a number of nominations from staff who wished to recognise their internal and external partners and colleagues. The assessment panel had a very difficult job as all the nominations were inspiring and a pleasure to read. We did however make our decisions and have highlighted the winners below.
Employee of the Year Award to Julie-Anne Murphy who works in the Airdrie office, for exceptional commitment in working to close the gap, in line with Routes to Work's visions and values
Partner of the Year Awards to the Simon Community and Barnardos, for collaborative work with Routes to Work on the Access to Opportunities Project
Partner of the Year Award to Johnny McConnell at Access to Industry, for collaborative work with Routes to Work
Significant Achievement Award to Allison McClair, for her strength, determination and resilience in overcoming obstacles
Employer of the Year Award to TRJ Contracts in Airdrie, for creating opportunities for local residents and supporting Routes to Work vision and values.

On Wednesday 26th June our generous staff from Coatbridge Office donated a range of goods to the Coatbridge Foodbank. This is a well-known venture used regularly by local residents in need of support. Thank you to all the volunteers at the Foodbank who do such a great job.
Free football sessions at Tryst Sports Centre & Ravenscraig Regional Sports Facility.
Programme for those aged 16+, completely free of charge and open to both male & females.
Football For All programme is an excellent way to improve your fitness, meet new friends and gain confidence.

The programme is weekly 1 hour football sessions with a Scottish FA Qualified Coach for Integrated Addiction Services with joint access for mental health services. It is open to male and females 16years +. We currently deliver these programmes in Airdrie, Cumbernauld (partnership with Clyde FC in the community), Wishaw, Coatbridge, Motherwell and Bellshill.
We will provide structured football sessions to improve their confidence, self-esteem, communication and social skills. Along with this, it will also improve their health and fitness. The group will meet new friends, interactive with people who are on similar paths in their life and ultimately help each other along the way. The programme will also address issues such as boredom and social isolation.
At our group in Airdrie there is evidence of improved family relationships and periods of total abstinence or people working towards a position of abstinence and lasting change. There is also evidence of a reduction in the offending behaviour of some. Most of all it has kept them away from alcohol, drugs, resulting in a significant improvement to those within the group who have mental health issues or problems. We will also provide the groups with their own training kit and an opportunity to obtain their Scottish Football Association Level 1.1 Qualification.
We are now in the process of organising a North Lanarkshire League where all 6 teams will come together once a month at a central location and play against each other. Within these days, the groups will also go through various workshops such as SuicideTalk, Nutrition and Positive Coaching.

Key success to the programme has been partnership work with regular support and guidance from the addiction/mental health workers.

On 19th March 2019 Routes to Work added its name to a charter aimed at helping employees who become terminally ill at work.
The Charter is part of the TUC’s wider Dying to Work campaign which is seeking greater security for terminally ill workers where they cannot be dismissed as a result of their condition. The STUC is taking the campaign forward in Scotland.
Dying to Work was taken forward by the TUC following the case of Jacci Woodcook, an area sales manager from Derbyshire who was forced out of her job three years ago after being diagnosed with terminal breast cancer.
The STUC is asking Scottish employers to sign up to the Dying to Work Charter to stop cases like Jacci’s happening in the future.
STUC Assistant General Secretary, Yvonne Stewart, said:
“Your job should be the least of your worries when you get a terminal diagnosis.
“I’m delighted that Routes To Work have shown real leadership in this area, signing up to guarantee fair treatment for terminally-ill workers.
“Over 830,000 workers are now covered by the Dying to Work charter across the UK. The STUC strongly support the TUC’s Dying to Work campaign and are encouraged by the increasing numbers of Scottish employers who are committing to sign up to the Charter.”

Only 9% of all IIP accredited organisations are in the third sector and only 16% of all IIP organisations have achieved the Gold standard.
We feel very proud to have achieved this standard of recognition which is in line with our vision and values and is a credit to the commitment of the Board to continually invest in the development of our staff and to all of our staff throughout the organisation for embracing the company value of being a learning organisation.
