Job description
Job title Bricklayer
Job purpose
Carry out skilled bricklaying and blockwork to create and maintain structures, walls, chimneys, foundations
etc. using various types of blocks, tiles, boards, and stone. The role includes pointing, internal block work,
working with mortar, and other specialist building materials. The role is undertaken in accordance with
Health & Safety guidelines.
Main responsibilities and duties
1. Advanced bricklaying and blockwork to create and maintain structures, walls, chimneys, foundations etc.
using various types of blocks, tiles, boards and stone. Various tasks including pointing, internal block
work, working with mortar, and other specialist construction materials. Measuring work areas and setting
out the first rows of bricks or blocks. Mixing mortar by hand or with a mechanical mixer. Applying mortar
with a trowel and laying bricks on top of each other. Shaping and trimming bricks using hammers, chisels
and power tools. Checking that rows are straight using a spirit level and plumb line.
2. Immediately report any problems/failures that may impact the business and/or its clients/customers to
your supervisor.
3. Responsibility for the equipment provided to use in the job role. Ensuring that equipment is used in
accordance with best practice and any training provided, along with the use of any safety equipment of
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) provided. Responsibility for ensuring the equipment used is
maintained and can be used/operated at all times. In the event of any faulty equipment, this must be
reported immediately to a supervisor.
4. The role is part of the overall construction team and as such may require the role holder to perform such
reasonable tasks that are required, as and when necessary, to maintain, promote, develop and expand
the business and its interests.
Required knowledge and skills
1. Extensive experience in bricklaying and blockwork on either domestic or commercial jobs.
2. Demonstrate good time management.
3. Experience on projects including, but not limited to, commercial buildings, new builds, extensions,
conversions, walls and decorative stonework.
4. Friendly and approachable manner.
5. Full UK drivers license preferable.
6. Requisite knowledge of the tools, equipment, and materials common to the trade.
7. Skills and experience in all aspects of the bricklaying trade and knowledge of the wider building and
construction industry.
8. Understand and deliver good customer service and maintain good supplier relationships.
Special working conditions
The role involves working at heights and on construction sites.
